Drones Near Meghalaya Border Raise Alarm
Meghalaya’s Director General of Police (DGP), Idashisha Nongrang, confirmed the sighting of Bayraktar TB2 drones near the state’s international border with Bangladesh. These drones were reportedly spotted in the areas of Sohra (Cherrapunjee) and Shella, which are situated along the 443-km-long border between the two nations. The incident has prompted concerns over border security, leading the state police to inform the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Indian Air Force (IAF).
According to reports, the drones, identified by the transponder code TB2R1071, were flying about 200 meters south of the zero line. The UAVs were operating from the Tejgaon Airbase in Bangladesh, flying over areas north of Chhatak and Sunamganj, regions in Bangladesh.
Border Security Efforts and Detainee Handovers
In a separate security development, the BSF apprehended seven Bangladeshi nationals in the Rattacherra area of East Jaintia Hills district. These individuals were detained as part of ongoing border security operations but were later handed over to the Border Guard Bangladesh as a goodwill gesture following a flag meeting between the two nations.
Smuggling Attempts Halted at Meghalaya-Bangladesh Border
Additionally, the BSF successfully intercepted several smuggling attempts along the Meghalaya-Bangladesh border, specifically in the Sonata, Dawki, and Kasinda areas of East Khasi Hills district. During these operations, the security forces seized a significant amount of contraband goods and cattle worth approximately Rs 9.83 lakh, which were intended for illegal transport into Bangladesh.
These incidents underscore the increasing security challenges at the Meghalaya-Bangladesh border, involving both drone activity and cross-border smuggling operations. Local authorities continue to coordinate efforts with the BSF and IAF to address these growing concerns and ensure the safety and security of the region.
