India has kicked off the AI Impact Summit 2026, bringing together heads of state, global tech executives, and policymakers to discuss the future of artificial intelligence. The summit addresses critical issues such as AI governance, job disruption, child safety, and ethical use of technology.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the five-day summit in New Delhi, emphasizing India’s growing role in science and technology. “This event highlights the talent and capabilities of our youth and showcases India’s progress in digital innovation,” he said in a social media post.

The 2026 edition is expected to attract 250,000 participants, including 20 national leaders and 45 ministerial-level delegations. Notable attendees include French President Emmanuel Macron and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, alongside top technology executives such as Sundar Pichai (Google CEO), Sam Altman (OpenAI CEO), Brad Smith (Microsoft President), Cristiano Amon (Qualcomm CEO), and Yann LeCun (AMI Labs Executive Chairman).
The summit provides a platform to explore the rapid evolution of AI technology, from generative AI creating text and images to advanced systems in healthcare, defense, and climate modeling.
India’s Role in Global AI Development
India positions itself as a bridge between advanced economies and the Global South, leveraging its experience in digital public infrastructure, including digital identity systems and online payment platforms. Officials note that India’s approach allows AI adoption at scale while maintaining cost efficiency.
Ashwini Vaishnaw, India’s Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, said: “Our goal is to ensure AI drives inclusive growth, sustainable development, and benefits humanity as a whole.”
Themes and Expected Outcomes
The summit is structured around three main themes: People, Progress, Planet, often referred to as the “three sutras”. While the event is unlikely to produce legally binding agreements, it may conclude with a nonbinding declaration on AI development goals and international collaboration.
Experts predict discussions will focus on creating regulatory guardrails without restricting innovation. The summit builds on previous editions in France, the United Kingdom, and South Korea, which began primarily as safety-focused meetings for AI experts and policymakers.
Seth Hays, author of the Asia AI Policy Monitor, said: “The summit will encourage governments to balance AI safety and innovation while strengthening international partnerships for AI integration.”
