Meghalaya Police Arrest Three in Major Indo-Bangla Human Trafficking Operation

Meghalaya Police have arrested three individuals near Byrnihat for their alleged involvement in an organized human trafficking network operating between India and Bangladesh. The arrests were made on March 18 following a targeted operation.

Police Intercept Vehicle Linked to Human Trafficking

Authorities set up a checkpoint at 4:10 PM on Tuesday based on intelligence reports about illegal border crossings. During the operation, officers stopped a vehicle (AS-01-FJ-4645) and discovered that Jannati Sheikh, a 26-year-old Bangladeshi national from Khulna, was in possession of a forged Aadhaar card.

The vehicle’s driver, Raushan Khan from Barpeta, Assam, was also detained. Upon questioning, both suspects admitted their involvement in smuggling individuals across the India-Bangladesh border in exchange for money.

Third Suspect Arrested After Interrogation

Based on the information gathered, the police arrested a third suspect, 27-year-old Balajied Khongsun from Wahlyngkhat, East Khasi Hills District.

Legal Action and Investigation

The case has been registered under Case No. 39(03)2025 at Nongpoh Police Station under multiple sections of the BNS and Foreigners Act of 1946. Authorities are now conducting a deeper investigation to uncover further links within the trafficking network.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of human trafficking along the Indo-Bangladesh border, and authorities are committed to cracking down on such illegal operations.
