A dispute in Meghalaya has raised significant concerns about growing religious tensions in the region. The issue centers around a land ownership conflict between the Ramakrishna Mission and the Mawkynrew Sports Club in Mawkynrew village. Tensions escalated when a confrontation occurred at the school’s construction site, leading to a clash between locals and police, resulting in multiple injuries.
The Assam-based Kutumba Surakshya Parishad (KSP) has strongly condemned the violence. Satya Ranjan Borah, the president of KSP, called the actions “anti-constitutional” and urged state authorities to act promptly. The group warned that such incidents could damage national integrity and internal security.
The land dispute is currently under legal proceedings, with the Ramakrishna Mission aiming to build a school to provide educational opportunities in the area. In response to the unrest, local authorities imposed a curfew in Mawkynrew to restore order.
Borah emphasized the need for citizens to adhere to their constitutional duties under Article 51A and called on the judiciary to better enforce these provisions. KSP also expressed deep concern about rising religious intolerance across Northeast India, particularly in Christian-majority states.
