Meghalaya’s 749 Critical Water Sources: Govt Plans Revival Measures

Meghalaya is confronting a water crisis, with over 749 water sources in the state marked as critical. To address this issue, the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Minister, Marcuise N. Marak, announced that the state government will take immediate measures to revive and preserve these vital resources.

The state has sought expert assistance to draft and implement a comprehensive water conservation project. One of the key initiatives will involve the integration of Internet of Things (IoT) technology to monitor water quality in rivers and other water bodies across Meghalaya.

Additionally, Marak shared that the state is aiming to complete the implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) by March 2025. Currently, 81.39 percent of the work has been completed, with more than 6000 projects under JJM, all of which are geo-tagged to ensure transparency and enable the Centre to release funds.

This initiative is part of the government’s continued effort to safeguard water resources and ensure a sustainable water supply for the people of Meghalaya.
