Meghalaya police have stepped up their search for a missing couple near Sohra in the East Khasi Hills district. On Wednesday, they used drones and sniffer dogs to help find the couple.
A senior Home Department official said Raja Raghuvanshi and his wife Sonam have been missing since Sunday evening. The search teams, supported by drones and K9 units, combed the trail to the famous root bridges in Nongriat village. The couple had stayed there for a night.
What Happened
The couple arrived in Mawlakhiat village on May 22. They rented a scooter to visit the root bridges in Nongriat. After staying overnight, they planned to return to Mawlakhiat. However, their scooter was found abandoned at a café on the Shillong-Sohra road on May 24.
Initially, local villagers helped with the search. Relatives filed a complaint after they could not contact the couple. So far, there are no confirmed updates on their location, and their phones are still switched off.
Similar Past Case: Hungarian Tourist Found Dead
In April, the body of a Hungarian tourist named Puskas Zsolt was found near Ramdait village. He had been missing for 12 days. Zsolt was trekking alone to the double-decker root bridge at Nongriat. Police said there was no foul play. They believe he died from an accidental fall. After the Hungarian Embassy filed a complaint, a search involving police, villagers, and social groups was launched.
Ongoing Search Efforts
The Meghalaya police continue their search for the missing couple. They use modern technology and work closely with local communities. The terrain is tough, so coordinated efforts remain vital.
