Prominent Tribal Leader and Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Dies
Shibu Soren, a well-known tribal leader and three-time Chief Minister of Jharkhand, died at 81 years old. He was being treated in Delhi for kidney problems and was on life support after a stroke last month.
A Long Political Career Fighting for Tribal Rights
Soren’s political career lasted over 40 years. He co-founded the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), a strong regional party that fought for the creation of Jharkhand state, separated from Bihar. Although he became Chief Minister three times, political troubles stopped him from completing a full term.
Family and Leaders Pay Tribute
His son, Hemant Soren, current Chief Minister of Jharkhand, shared the sad news and called his father “Dishom Guru,” which means “great leader” in the Santhali language of the Santhal tribe. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also praised Soren as a “grassroots leader” who cared deeply for the people.
Early Life and Key Achievements
Born in 1944 in a small village now in Jharkhand, Soren dedicated his life to tribal rights. He started JMM in 1973, focusing on the demand for a separate tribal state. When Jharkhand became a state in 2000, Soren became an important political figure.
Legal Challenges and Political Struggles
Soren served as India’s Coal Minister in 2004 but stepped down after being convicted in a murder case. He was later granted bail and returned to politics. In 2005, he became Chief Minister again but resigned due to lack of support in the state assembly. He faced further legal issues but was cleared in 2018.
Nationwide Mourning for a Tribal Icon
Leaders from all parties expressed their sadness. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh called Soren “the key figure” behind Jharkhand’s creation. Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Raut said Soren was “like a god” to Jharkhand’s people. Former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav remembered him as a great fighter for tribal and Dalit rights.
