Call for Public Apology
The Voice of the People Party (VPP) has demanded a public apology from the former education minister for the “thoughtless” implementation of the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) program in Meghalaya during the 2009-10 period.
Ongoing Agitation by SSA Teachers
VPP spokesperson Batskhem Myrboh highlighted that the ongoing protests by SSA teachers reflect significant problems within the education system, underscoring the need for accountability and self-reflection.
Accountability and Disciplinary Actions
Myrboh stated that the flawed implementation of the SSA program has created challenges for the state, its teachers, students, and the public. He called for accountability for those responsible and suggested disciplinary actions, such as withholding annual increments or promotions for the officers involved, due to their incompetence and the considerable losses faced by the state.
Overview of the SSA Program
The SSA program, launched in 2001, aims to achieve universal elementary education through collaboration between the central and state governments. It received constitutional support through the 86th amendment, which establishes free and compulsory education as a fundamental right for children aged 6 to 14.
